My Top 5 Artists (Week Ending 2008-5-11) »

I’m continuing my homage to Ólafur Arnalds with the last track of his 2006 release, Eulogy for Evolution, “37:04/38:37”. Why do I like this one? Well, I definitely love some restrained piano work, bonus for atmospheric strings. I love some wall-of-sound textural guitar layered on top of math-rock flavored drumming. Dab some organ/drone in there for good measure. Process to taste, and Ólafur Arnalds does in 2:35 what takes GY!BE 20 minutes - granted that this is the culmination of almost 40 minutes beforehand. (Heresy, I know.) Pastiche without being kitsch. Go ahead and have yourself a listen.

Can anyone explain to me why this is acceptable way for anyone to look? Why is he allowed to be associated with fashion when he looks like something out of a Dee-Lite video? I get that he’s gay, but that doesn’t justify that hair, does it?
Another Ólafur Arnalds - this one, however, is a cover of a Death Cab song. Jump to 1:50 for the song or don’t for an amusing anecdote.
Ólafur Arnalds - Marching Bands of Manhattan
A fantastic piece by one of my new favorites, Ólafur Arnalds. Wonderfully somber work that incorporates electronic beats and glitches into a classical orchestration. Skip to about 0:38 unless you can understand Icelandic.
Ólafur Arnalds - ‘Fok’ live on Kastljós, RÚV TV Iceland (via erasedtapes)
This is probably one of the biggest reasons that I’m jealous of my brother for having Bonaroo tickets when I don’t. If you haven’t heard this, I strongly recommend it. If you’re not one for long songs, go ahead and jump in around 2:05 or so.

In case there was ever any doubt: Russians are fucking badasses.
Without a doubt.

Oh god, this has to be the best ever. A good friend of mine was having a panic attack and this was the best I could do to help. Challenge me by finding something better to take your subconscious off of terrible things. You can’t.

The Dunder Mifflin (Scranton branch) structure chart, as seen in the episode ‘Did I Stutter?’. So many great details.
